SASSA Status Check Banking Details: Every Message Explained
See what each SASSA banking details message means, how long verification takes, which bank codes work and how to fix a failed account in 2026.
A SASSA status check for banking details shows whether the bank account linked to your SRD R370 grant has passed SASSA's verification. If the line says Bank Details Verified, SASSA can pay you on your normal payment date. If it says Pending, Failed, Not Linked or CashSend Active, the money cannot reach your bank account yet.
This is an independent information guide for people in South Africa. We are not affiliated with SASSA or government, and we cannot see your record. Every check and every update happens on the official portal at srd.sassa.gov.za. This guide explains what each banking message means, how long the checks really take, which branch codes to use, how to fix OTP problems and which scams to avoid.
What the banking details status actually tells you
The banking line is separate from your SRD application status, and it describes only the account SASSA has on record for you.
Your application status (Pending, Approved or Declined) is about eligibility. The banking line is about whether money can land. SASSA will not release a payment into an account that fails its checks. The account must be open, active and held in your name only, and it must be with a bank on the approved list. The grant is R370 a month, paid into the account you chose as your payment method.
This is why two SRD beneficiaries can both be Approved while only one gets paid. The other one has an unverified account and does not know it. A single banking details issue can hold up a payment for weeks.
The five banking messages and what each one needs from you
SASSA shows one of five banking messages, and each one points to a different action.
| Message | What it means | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Bank Details Pending | Your bank is still checking the account | Wait and do not resubmit |
| Bank Details Verified | The account passed the check | Keep the account active |
| No Bank Details / Not Linked | No account on your record | Add details now |
| Bank Details Not Verified / Failed | The check failed | Fix the cause, then resubmit once |
| CashSend Active | You collect a voucher instead | Collect it with your ID |
Bank Details Pending
Your details have gone to your bank, and SASSA is waiting for the bank to confirm that the account is open, active and in your exact legal name. This normally clears in 3 to 7 business days. Do not send the same details again while it says Pending. A second submission cancels the first check and restarts the clock.
Bank Details Verified
The bank confirmed the account. The deposit goes in when your SRD application status is Approved and a payment date has been assigned. Keep the account open and active. A dormant account can still block a later payment, even after a clean check.
No Bank Details / Not Linked
There is no bank account on your record. This usually happens when you applied with CashSend and never switched, or when an earlier switch was never finished. Log in and add your details immediately.
Bank Details Not Verified / Failed (also shown as Bank Details Failed)
The check failed. The usual causes are a name that does not match your ID, an account that is inactive or dormant, an account that is closed or blocked, a Wrong Account Number or Branch Code, or an account that is not in your name. Find the exact reason first. Sending the same broken details again gives you the same Failed result.
Name problems are common. A maiden name, a married name, a nickname or a shortened first name is enough to fail the bank's match against your South African ID.
CashSend Active
Your payment method is CashSend. You get a CashSend voucher and collect the cash at a till point at a retail partner: Pick n Pay, Boxer, USave, Shoprite or Checkers. No bank verification is needed for this route, and no bank card is swiped. You can switch to a bank account later, and then the normal 3 to 7 business day check applies.
How to check your SASSA banking details status right now
Open srd.sassa.gov.za in your phone browser, choose the SRD status option, enter your 13-digit ID number and the one-time PIN, and your banking line appears. The whole check takes about two minutes on a cheap phone.
- Type the address yourself. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za directly. Do not tap a link from WhatsApp, Facebook or an SMS.
- Enter your 13-digit ID number. One wrong digit and you get No Records Found, or someone else's profile.
- Wait for the OTP. SASSA sends a one-time PIN to your registered mobile number. OTPs expire within 5 minutes.
- Open your profile. The banking details management page shows your payment method, an account number that is partly hidden for security, and the verification status.
- Screenshot this page. Keep the date, time and reference number in case you need to query it.
Run this SASSA banking details status check before you phone the helpline. It saves the agent time and gives you the exact message to quote. A SASSA status check for banking details is a lookup of this one line on the same profile page.
SASSA status banking details pending: what it means and how long it lasts
It means SASSA has your new account details, but your bank has not confirmed them yet. For most people, the message clears within 3 to 7 business days.
When "Bank Details Pending" appears
- You loaded bank details for the first time with your application.
- You changed to a different account.
- You replaced an account that failed earlier.
How long the pending message usually stays
| Bank | Typical wait |
|---|---|
| Postbank | 1 to 3 business days |
| Capitec, TymeBank | 3 to 5 business days |
| ABSA, FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank | 3 to 7 business days |
| African Bank | 5 to 10 business days |
| Any file sent for manual review | 10 to 21 business days |
Phone 0800 60 10 11 if nothing has moved after 14 business days. The longest normal wait is usually about 21 business days.
What stretches the pending period
- The peak payment window. Submissions made between the 20th and 31st of the month sit behind live payment runs.
- FICA that is out of date. The Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) requires your bank to keep your details current. If the bank has FICA Not Completed at Your Bank on file, the confirmation stalls until you hand in your documents.
- Repeated resubmissions. Each one restarts the verification process and can raise a fraud flag that sends the file to manual review.
- Details that need a human. A mismatch gets pulled out of the queue and waits for an agent.
How to change your banking details
You change them on the official portal, and the change only goes through after you enter the OTP sent to your registered number.
Step 1: Get your documents ready
You need your 13-digit ID number, a SIM that receives SMS on the registered SASSA phone number, your bank account number from your banking app or bank card, your branch code, and your account type (savings or current).
Step 2: Open the right page
Type srd.sassa.gov.za into the browser yourself, then choose Update Banking Details. After login, you land on the srd.sassa.gov.za page. Never arrive there through a WhatsApp or SMS link. The banking details update through the SASSA status check takes about five minutes when the network is quiet.
Step 3: Enter your ID and ask for the PIN
Type your ID number and request the OTP. It arrives within seconds if the phone has signal.
Step 4: Enter the OTP, or open the secure link
Some applicants get an SMS with a secure personalised link instead of a code. That link is single-use and tied to your profile. Do not forward it to anyone, not even family.
Step 5: Tap Verify Identity
This is the identity verification step introduced in 2025. It may ask you to scan a QR code for biometric verification, or it may finish the check on your phone. Do not skip it, because the process stops without it.
Step 6: Capture the account
Choose your bank from the list, type the account number, pick the account type (savings or current), and add the branch code. Compare every digit with your card or app before you continue.
Step 7: Submit and save the proof
Tap Submit. Screenshot the confirmation with the date, time and reference number. The status then shows Bank Details Pending.
Cannot get your OTP?
You cannot update banking details without an OTP, so fix the phone side first. Then try the portal again.
The SIM is dead, lost or in another phone
Ask MTN, Vodacom, Cell C or Telkom to reactivate or replace the SIM on the same number. Once the number works again, the OTP arrives normally.
The number itself has changed
You must update your registered SASSA phone number before anything else. Do that on srd.sassa.gov.za, then return to the banking screen.
The SMS never arrives but the phone works
Check your signal and your SMS inbox, tap Resend OTP once, and wait five minutes. If nothing comes, phone 0800 60 10 11 (Monday to Friday, during business hours (confirm current availability)) and ask for a manual update through a SASSA agent.
The portal is down
Maintenance and peak traffic both cause this. Try later, use the Moya App, or visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID document, a bank statement or bank card, and proof of residence such as a utility bill.
Which banks SASSA pays into, and the codes to use
SASSA pays into accounts at banks that belong to the Payments Association of South Africa (PASA), and the account has to be in your name only.
| Bank | Universal branch code |
|---|---|
| Standard Bank | 051001 |
| ABSA Bank | 632005 |
| First National Bank (FNB) | 250655 |
| Nedbank | 198765 |
| Capitec Bank | 470010 |
| African Bank | 430000 |
| TymeBank | 678910 |
| Discovery Bank | 679000 |
| Investec | 580105 |
| Postbank | 460005 |
Accounts that get rejected
- Someone else's account, even a spouse's, parent's or child's, counts as a third-party account.
- A joint account, even when the other holder agrees.
- A business or trust account, including Business accounts at any bank.
- Stokvel/Co-op accounts, stokvels and informal savings clubs.
- Non-PASA-registered fintech accounts. These come back as Bank Not on SASSA's Approved List.
- Higher-end products such as Private Banking, or Gold / Black Card Accounts at some banks, can also be rejected. If yours fails, ask for a simple account instead.
A personal savings or transactional account held in your own name does work. At Capitec, the EveryDay Account, the MyWorld Account and the Savings / Social Grant Account all verify. At TymeBank, a standard account in your name verifies too.
Best bank for SASSA in 2026
Postbank is the fastest, because it is built for grant payments and confirms in 1 to 3 business days. TymeBank is the cheapest for most people, with no monthly fee and a 3 to 5 business day check.
Bank verification times in 2026
Most checks finish in 3 to 7 business days, and the bank you use plus the date you submit decide whether you wait closer to 3 or closer to 21.
- Postbank: 1 to 3 business days.
- Capitec and TymeBank: 3 to 5 business days.
- FNB, ABSA, Standard Bank and Nedbank: 3 to 7 business days.
- African Bank: 5 to 10 business days.
- Files sent for manual review: 10 to 21 business days.
- Inside the peak window: add another 3 to 7 business days.
Two weeks is a fair cutoff for a normal check, and 5 to 7 business days is normal for a first-time submission. If nothing has moved by then, phone 0800 60 10 11 and ask for an escalation. Once a failed payment is returned and sent back for reprocessing, allow 2 to 4 weeks.
Approved but no payment: when banking details are the cause
Sometimes the banking line is the reason, and sometimes your payment date has not arrived yet.
Check these in order
- Look for your payment date. SRD payments are batched across the month. Your date can be later than the first payments you see other people receive.
- Check the banking line. Anything other than Bank Details Verified means the account is blocking the payment.
- Open your banking app. A previously verified account can later be closed or blocked, or it can go dormant after 3 to 6 months with no activity (Capitec marks an account dormant after 90 days).
- Ask about a reversal. A rejected transfer goes back to SASSA and is reprocessed in the next batch. That takes 2 to 4 weeks, and a full recovery can take 4 to 6 weeks.
When it is not a banking problem
- Your Approved status carries a future payment date. Nothing is wrong, so wait for that date.
- The approval covers a backdated month, and backdated payments can take 1 to 3 extra payment cycles.
- Your appeal was approved late, so the money sits in a later payment cycle.
Will updating banking details fix a Declined status?
No. A Declined status comes from eligibility, so new banking details will not change it.
There are a few reasons a SASSA status is Declined: income-source flags, UIF registered declines, NSFAS registered declines and identity verification failures. These eligibility declines cannot be fixed on the banking screen.
Appeal decision times vary. Check your submitted month on the official portal; see our appeal timing guidance for the distinction between submission deadlines and processing targets.
Is USSD available?
Moya lets you check and update without buying data, which matters when you have no airtime left.
- Download Moya from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
- Open SASSA Services inside the app.
- Choose Update Banking Details to load or change an account.
- You can also run a SASSA SRD status check, see your SASSA balance and read payment dates.
Scams that target people checking banking details
Anyone who asks for your OTP, card PIN or bank password is a scammer, no matter how official the message looks.
- Fake SASSA pages with addresses that only look right. Type srd.sassa.gov.za yourself and check for the padlock.
- WhatsApp or SMS links that promise to "fix" your banking details for you.
- People at taxi ranks or on Facebook charging R50 to R200 to do the update on your behalf.
- Callers who say they are from SASSA and want your card number or the PIN on the back.
SASSA can send an OTP for you to enter on its official website. Never disclose or forward that OTP to a caller, helper or anyone claiming to be an agent. Never share your bank PIN or password.
Payment dates and the November 2026 change
SRD payments are batched through each month, and the November 2026 dates were moved because of the 4 November local government elections.
Older Persons was paid early on Friday 30 October 2026, Disability on Monday 2 November 2026, Children's on Tuesday 3 November 2026, and grants under review on Thursday 5 November 2026. The SRD November date has not been released yet.
Public holidays such as Heritage Day can also shift a date, so always check the latest schedule. See SASSA Payment Dates November 2026, SASSA Payment Dates October 2026, SASSA Payment Dates September 2026 and the full SASSA Payment Dates 2026/27: Full Schedule. Our SASSA payment dates guide explains how the batches work.

Frequently asked questions
The answers below cover the questions people ask most about the banking line, in plain English.
What does the banking details line on my SRD record mean?
It shows whether SASSA can pay into the account on file. Verified means yes. Pending means the bank is still checking. Failed, Not Linked or CashSend means no bank payment is possible yet.
How do I change my banking details?
Log in at srd.sassa.gov.za, choose Update Banking Details, enter your ID and the OTP, tap Verify Identity, capture the new account and Submit. Keep your reference number.
Where do I check my banking details status online?
Only on srd.sassa.gov.za. The status page is srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status, and the banking screen opens after login. No WhatsApp group or Facebook page can see your record.
My line says Bank Details Pending. Is that bad?
No. It is normal for a new or changed account, and it only means the bank has not answered SASSA yet. Give it 5 to 7 business days before you worry.
I cannot get the OTP. What now?
Check signal and inbox, tap Resend OTP once, and make sure the SIM is in the phone. If the SIM is dead, ask MTN, Vodacom, Cell C or Telkom to fix it. If your number changed, update the registered SASSA phone number first. Still stuck? Call 0800 60 10 11.
When does "Bank Details Pending" appear?
When you send details for the first time, when you move to a new account, or when you replace an account that failed.
How long does the pending message last?
Postbank 1 to 3 business days, Capitec and TymeBank 3 to 5 business days, the big four 3 to 7 business days, African Bank 5 to 10 business days, and 10 to 21 business days if an agent has to look at the file.
What makes the wait longer?
Submitting between the 20th and 31st of the month, bank FICA records that are out of date, sending the same details more than once, and any mismatch that needs manual review.
What is the normal wait for bank verification in 2026?
Usually 3 to 7 business days, with up to 21 business days in a bad case. Peak periods add about a week.
Is an OTP always needed before I can update?
Yes. The portal will not pass the Verify Identity step without the one-time PIN or the secure single-use link sent by SMS.
My status is Approved but no payment has come. Is it a banking problem?
Check the banking line first. If it shows anything other than Verified, yes. If it shows Verified and the account is active, the delay is in the payment run.
Which branch code goes with a Capitec account?
470010, the universal code. Do not use an old branch-specific code.
Will SASSA pay into a TymeBank account?
Yes. TymeBank is on the approved list and 678910 is its universal code. The check usually takes 3 to 5 business days.
May I use another person's bank account for my grant?
No. A spouse's, parent's, friend's or joint account is rejected. The account must be in your name only.
How many times can I update my banking details?
SASSA does not publish a limit, but every submission restarts the check. Repeated changes can flag your file for manual review. Change once, then wait for the check to finish.
Will new banking details fix a Declined status?
No. Declines are about eligibility. Appeal within 90 days at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal.
What if my banking details failed verification?
Find the cause: name mismatch, dormant or closed account, wrong digits, a third-party account or a bank not on the list. Fix it at the bank, then submit once more.
The screen says "SASSA status banking details pending". What is happening?
It is the same message: SASSA is waiting for your bank to confirm the account. Nothing is wrong with your application.
Approved but no payment: how do I know banking is the cause?
The banking line will read Pending, Failed or Not Linked, or your bank will show the account as closed, blocked or dormant.
When is it not a banking problem?
When the banking line is Verified, the account is active, and your payment date has not arrived yet, or when you are waiting on backdated or appeal money.
