SASSA Banking Details: Change Them for R370
Change your SASSA banking details for the R370 SRD grant: the srd.sassa.gov.za link, OTP steps, branch codes, error fixes and when the money arrives.
Section 1: How do I change my SASSA banking details?
You change them yourself on the official SASSA SRD portal at srd.sassa.gov.za, using your 13-digit South African ID number and the 10-digit phone number SASSA has on record. The form takes about 3 to 5 minutes and costs nothing. Your bank checks your new account in 3 to 10 working days.
The SASSA SRD R370 grant is paid into one account only. If a single digit is wrong, the payment bounces back and you lose a month. The amount was R350 (old) until 31 March 2024 and has been R370 since 1 April 2024.
Ten steps, no queue
- Open the official SASSA website. Type srd.sassa.gov.za into your browser. Check the .gov.za domain before you type your ID.
- Choose Language. Pick English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sepedi or Sesotho.
- Pick your ID type. Choose South African ID Holder if you hold a smart ID card or green ID book. Choose Asylum Seeker / Special Permit Holder if that is your status.
- Type your ID number. All 13 digits, no spaces and no dashes. One wrong digit pulls up another record or shows ID Number Not Found.
- Select Change Banking Details. This option sits on the SASSA SRD portal menu.
- Enter your registered phone number. It must match the 10-digit registered phone number on your SASSA file.
- Do the OTP verification. A 6-digit OTP (one-time PIN) arrives by SMS. Type it, then tap Verify PIN.
- Open the secure SMS link. SASSA sends a secure SMS link that opens the banking details form. Open it at once and do not forward it.
- Fill in the banking details form. Pick your bank name from the dropdown menu, type your account number, choose the account type (Savings or Cheque/Current) and add the branch code.
- Submit. Tick the consent declaration that the account is yours, then tap Submit. An SMS confirmation means SASSA has your form.

Section 2: When do you need to send new banking details?
Send new details when your present account cannot take the money (a closed, dormant or deactivated account, for example), or when SASSA holds no verified account for you.
- You opened a new bank account.
- Your old account is closed, dormant or deactivated.
- You switched banks.
- You want to move from cash collection to a direct bank transfer.
- Your payment bounces back two months running.
- You spotted a wrong digit in your account number or branch code.
- Your status shows Bank Details Pending.
- You think someone changed your details without asking you.
Section 3: Which accounts can receive the grant?
Only a personal account held in your own name can receive the R370 monthly grant.
Your SASSA banking details must match your ID. SASSA does not accept joint accounts or business accounts. It also refuses any third-party account held by a spouse, relative or friend. The bank verification process checks the name on the account. If it does not match, the payment is refused, and a mismatch can start a fraud investigation and suspend your grant.
Section 4: What you need before you start
You need seven things, and six of them must match the details SASSA already holds.
| Item | What it must be |
|---|---|
| Your ID | Your 13-digit South African ID number, from your smart ID card or green ID book. Both count as a South African ID document. |
| Your phone | The 10-digit registered phone number, on an active SIM card that is RICA-registered in your own name. |
| Bank name | The bank holding your personal account, chosen from the dropdown menu. |
| Account number | Your own account number, typed with no spaces. |
| Account type | Savings or Cheque/Current. |
| Branch code | The universal branch code for your bank (see Section 6). |
| Name on the account | Must read exactly as it does on your ID. |
The RICA SIM Mandate matters here: the SIM in your phone must be registered under your own ID number, not a parent's or a partner's.
You do the whole update in one place: the srd.sassa.gov.za banking details form. There is no separate srd.sassa.gov.za banking details update link. To do an srd banking details update, start at the main portal and work through the menu.
Section 5: Can you use Capitec, TymeBank or another bank?
Yes. SASSA pays into any registered bank in South Africa, so a personal account at Capitec, TymeBank, Standard Bank, Absa Bank, Nedbank, FNB / First National Bank, African Bank, Discovery Bank, Investec or Bank Zero will work.
The steps are identical for every bank. Many people still search for srd change banking details to Capitec or for sassa change banking details for r350; the old R350 name changes nothing on the form.
Capitec Bank. Use a personal Savings or transaction account. For an srd change banking details to Capitec, choose Capitec from the list, pick Savings or Cheque/Current, then copy the account number and branch code from the Capitec app under My Accounts.
TymeBank. Your account number and branch code sit in the TymeBank app. If your TymeBank account is a Savings account, choose Savings; when unsure, check the app.
Postbank. If you are paid through Postbank (Black Card), or still carry an old SASSA Gold Card, you do not need to change anything unless you opened a bank account elsewhere. Gold Cards are being swapped for Postbank Black Cards, and the swap is free.
Section 6: Branch codes and where to get the right one
Use the universal branch code that your bank shows in its app or on your statement. One code covers every branch of that bank nationwide.
SASSA has not published a branch code list for 2026, so a code copied from a random page or a WhatsApp group can cost you a month. Get it from a bank statement, a bank letter, or the bank's own app.
- Capitec: open the Capitec app, go to My Accounts and read the code shown there. It is the same code nationwide.
- TymeBank: the TymeBank app shows one code for every customer.
- FNB / First National Bank, Standard Bank, Absa Bank, Nedbank, African Bank, Discovery Bank, Investec, Bank Zero: your statement or the bank's app carries the universal branch code.
If the code belongs to a different bank, the form can fail with Account Validation Failed.
Section 7: What the banking line on your status check means
That line tells you whether SASSA holds a verified account for you. It is not a payment date.
People often type sassa status check banking details into Google when they want to know if a new account was accepted. Run a SASSA SRD status check at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status, or an srd status check from the same page. Then read the banking line:
- If the line says Banking Details or Approved, the account is on file and the grant will be paid there on your payment date.
- If the line says Bank Details Pending, there is no verified account yet. Either the form was never sent, the verification check is still running, or it failed.
- If the line says Banking Details Already Updated This Month, you have used your one change for the month.
Also read the grant status itself. Approved means the money is due; Pending means SASSA is still checking that month. If the grant was declined, you have 90 days to appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal. Our appeal guide walks through it.
Section 8: How long does the update take?
The bank verification process takes 3 to 10 working days, and the new account normally shows on your status within 5 to 10 working days.
| Stage | How long |
|---|---|
| SMS confirmation after you Submit | Straight away |
| Your bank checks the account | Often 3 to 7 working days; allow 3 to 10 working days |
| Your status shows the new account | 5 to 10 working days |
| First deposit into the new account | Your next payment cycle |
Do the update in the first two weeks of the month to keep that month's payment cycle. A change made later usually moves to the next payment cycle, even when your personal SASSA payment date is still days away. If nothing has changed after 10 working days, phone the SASSA helpline.
For the monthly pay window (21st to 30th) and each date, see SASSA Payment Dates. The November 2026 SRD date had not been released when this page was written.
Section 9: What if you cannot use the website?
Phone the SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11, send a WhatsApp to 082 046 8553, email srd@sassa.gov.za, or visit a SASSA office with your ID and bank proof.
By phone or WhatsApp
The Toll-Free Helpline is 0800 60 10 11. It answers Monday to Friday, during business hours (confirm current availability). Have your ID number and new bank details ready. Write the bank name, account type, branch code and account number on paper before you call. On WhatsApp, send your ID number to 082 046 8553 and follow the replies.
At a SASSA office
Take your original ID, a bank statement or bank letter showing the account, and your phone. Offices are open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Section 10: Error messages and how to fix them
Most failures come from one wrong digit or a SIM that is not RICA-registered, so fix that first and then try again.
OTP Not Received
- Wait 3 to 5 minutes. SMS can be slow on a busy network.
- Check your signal and clear space in your inbox.
- Confirm the SIM is active and RICA-registered to your ID number.
- Restart at srd.sassa.gov.za after 10 minutes.
Account Validation Failed
- Re-check the branch code against your bank statement.
- Re-type the account number with no spaces, and keep any leading zeros.
- Make sure the account type is right: Savings or Cheque/Current.
- The account must be open, in your name, and not dormant.
Banking Details Already Updated This Month
SASSA allows one change a month. Wait until the 1st of next month, or phone 0800 60 10 11 to ask what your options are.
SMS Link Has Expired
The secure SMS link works once and only for a short time. Start again at srd.sassa.gov.za and open the new link the moment it lands.
System Unavailable
The portal is overloaded or under maintenance. Try before 8am or after 8pm, when traffic is lower, or phone the SASSA helpline.
ID Number Not Found
You typed a wrong digit, or your application sits under a different number. Run a SASSA status check. If that also fails, update your registered phone number first at srd.sassa.gov.za.
Section 11: How do you keep your details safe?
You keep them safe by treating your OTP, your ID number and the secure SMS link as private, and by never paying anyone for a free change.
- No SASSA official asks for your OTP by phone, WhatsApp, SMS or Facebook.
- Type the address yourself. Never follow a link from a chat.
- Never pay a "consultant" to do the update for you.
- Do a status check after every change, and once a month.
- If someone claims your details were changed, phone the SASSA fraud hotline on 0800 60 10 11.
- Keep your bank statement and bank letter away from strangers. They carry your account number.
Scammers target South Africans who are waiting for a grant, so slow down when a message says "urgent". SassaCheck is an independent guide, not SASSA and not a government site.
Frequently asked questions
What is the procedure for sending SASSA a new bank account?
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za, choose Change Banking Details, enter your 13-digit ID number and your registered phone number, then type the 6-digit OTP and open the secure SMS link. Fill the form, tick the consent declaration and Submit. It is free.
Can I finish the whole update on my phone?
Yes. The form works on any cheap phone with a browser and takes under 5 minutes. You only need a steady signal and your RICA-registered SIM in the phone.
Which web address do I type to change my details?
The SASSA banking details link is srd.sassa.gov.za. The status page is srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status. There is no separate site; anything on another domain is not official.
Which branch code do I fill in for Capitec?
Use Capitec's universal branch code, the one in the Capitec app under My Accounts or on your bank statement. SASSA has not published a code list, and a guessed code fails the check.
What code does TymeBank use?
Open the TymeBank app and copy the single branch code it shows. Every TymeBank customer uses the same one.
How long before the new account starts working?
The bank check takes 3 to 10 working days, and your status should show the change within 5 to 10 working days. The money then arrives in the next payment cycle.
Will SASSA pay into a Capitec account?
Yes, if it is a personal Savings or transaction account in your own name. A joint account or a business account will not work.
Will SASSA pay into a TymeBank account?
Yes. TymeBank gives you an account number and a branch code in the app, and both fit the form.
How often can I change my banking details in one month?
Once. A second try returns Banking Details Already Updated This Month. Wait until the 1st of next month, or phone 0800 60 10 11 to ask what to do.
My OTP has not come. What now?
Wait 3 to 5 minutes and check your signal and inbox. Make sure the SIM is active and RICA-registered in your name. If nothing arrives, restart after 10 minutes at srd.sassa.gov.za.
I sent new details but the money still did not arrive. Why?
Common reasons: the bank check is still running, the account is dormant or closed, the name does not match your ID, or you changed after the cut-off and the payment moved to the next payment cycle. Run a status check and read the banking line.
Could someone change my details without my permission?
They would need your ID number and the OTP sent to your RICA-registered SIM. If an SMS mentions a change you did not make, phone the SASSA fraud hotline on 0800 60 10 11 and check your status at once.
What does a banking line on the SASSA status check mean?
It shows whether a verified account is on file. "Banking Details" or "Approved" means yes. "Bank Details Pending" means no verified account yet.
When is the best time to make the change?
The best time is in the first two weeks of the month, before your personal SASSA payment date. Late changes usually apply from the next payment cycle.
I do not have a bank account. What are my options?
Stay on cash collection: you can draw the grant at Shoprite or the Post Office with a Postbank Black Card. You can also open a personal account and then do the srd banking details update. For the monthly dates, see SASSA Payment Dates.
