SASSA Balance Online: Check Your SRD R370 Grant

Check your SASSA balance online for the SRD R370 grant in 2026, read your payment status, fix a zero balance and update your banking details safely.

What it means to check your SASSA balance online

You check your SASSA balance online by opening srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status and entering your ID number and the cellphone number you used to apply. The page shows your SRD R370 payment status, the monthly amount and your next payment date.

A SASSA status check and a bank balance are two different things. The SRD status portal tells you whether your grant is Pending, Approved, Paid or Declined, but it does not show the money sitting in your bank account. For that, open your bank app or use an ATM and look at your current balance.

Checking your SASSA balance online is free and works at any hour. You can see a full payment history, follow it month by month and check your grant status before you travel to a SASSA branch. It also gives you proof of application if a payment goes missing.

You can check your SASSA balance online from any phone with a browser. The portal is an official government portal, so type the address yourself instead of tapping a link in an SMS.

Can you check your balance right now?

Yes. Have your South African ID number and your registered phone number ready, then follow five short steps to check your balance online.

Enter your details

Type your South African ID number and your phone number. Keep your AppID nearby as proof of application. Never use someone else's ID or a number that is not registered in your name.

Verify your information

The portal sends a one-time password, or OTP, by SMS to your cellphone number. Type it in the box, or log in with your login details and password if you made an account. This step protects your personal information.

View your balance

Once you verify your SASSA balance online, the screen shows your payment status, the amount due and your next payment date. Read it carefully before you decide the money is missing.

Save the information

Write down the date, your status and any reference number, or take a screenshot. That record helps if you need to contact SASSA later. Only submit the form again if the page asks you to confirm something.

Which official channels can you use?

Use the SASSA portal, the SRD status portal, WhatsApp, the Moya App or a retail till point. All of them are official channels and none charges a fee to check your status.

SASSA status check methods at a glance

The main SASSA status check methods are the portal, WhatsApp, the Moya App and a shop till. Pick the one that fits your phone and your data.

Official SASSA online portal and SRD status portal

The official SASSA online portal at srd.sassa.gov.za handles status checks, new applications and banking changes. The SRD status portal at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status shows Approved, Pending or Declined plus the payment date for the month. The official SASSA website, sassa.gov.za, links to the same pages.

SASSA WhatsApp channel

The verified WhatsApp line is 082 046 8553. Save it, send "Hi" and follow the prompts. This SASSA WhatsApp channel handles SRD questions only. It is not a general call centre, so do not send your ID there.

Moya App

The Moya App uses no mobile data on most networks. It shows the same status and payment date as the portal, which helps people in rural areas with a weak signal.

ATM and retail till point

You can use your SASSA Gold Card or SASSA debit or benefit card at an ATM, or ask for a balance at a retail till point. At shops such as Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, Usave and Spar, the cashier can swipe the card and print a slip. Self-service kiosks in some stores do the same. An ATM outside the Postbank network may charge a fee.

Bank app

If SASSA pays your grant into a personal bank account, the money appears in your bank app like any other deposit. Open the app and check your balance there. Keep your PIN private, even in a busy queue.

When does SASSA pay?

SASSA pays the SRD R370 grant between the 21st and the 30th of each month. The older persons, disability and children's grants run earlier and start on the second working day of the month.

The order is older persons first, then disability, then children's grants across the second, third and fourth working day. If a date falls on a weekend or a public holiday, the next scheduled payment date moves to the next working day. So the July 2026 payment run started with Thursday 2 July and Friday 3 July, while Saturday 4 July 2026 pushed the next slot to Monday 6 July.

For the current payment schedule, see SASSA payment dates. Your own SRD payment date must be checked on your status record.

No grant is paid on Wednesday 4 November 2026 because of the local government elections on 4 November. The SRD date for November 2026 has not been released, so check the portal instead of trusting a screenshot.

December is the busiest month. Check your payment date early and do not rush to withdraw cash on the first day. Heritage Day falls on 24 September 2026, and the September 2026 payments shift around that public holiday. The October 2026 run follows the same pattern. Upcoming payment dates are posted on the official portal each month.

How much does each grant pay in 2026/27?

The SRD Grant (R370) pays R370 a month, the Older Persons Grant (ages 60 to 74) pays R2,400 and the Older Persons Grant (ages 75+) pays R2,420.

See the current payment schedule and grant amounts. Your individual SRD payday must be checked in your status result.

The Old Age Pension, now called the Older Persons (Old Age) Grant, is the largest payment in the table. Grant-in-Aid is R580, about 25% of the older persons grant.

The R370 SRD grant was R350 until 31 March 2024 and has paid R370 since 1 April 2024. It is funded to 31 March 2027, and October 2026 budget documents extend it for another year beyond March 2027 at the same R370.

The National Treasury sets these amounts in the Budget. The Treasury reviews them each year. Figures such as R830, R280, a R250 top-up or a special bonus do not appear in the official table. Foster Care and Foster Child Grant payments follow the children's run.

How does the SASSA means test treat income?

For the SRD grant, the means test looks at your own income, and the threshold is R624 a month. Earn more than that and you fall outside the grant.

The R624 figure is a monthly SRD threshold, not an annual allowance or the threshold for every other grant. Read the assessment for the month concerned and the other published eligibility conditions.

You may see figures such as R24,000 a month, R48,000 a month, R288,000 or R576,000 a year. Those are not the SRD threshold. There is no 25% sliding scale that lets a high earner qualify. A 25% payment rule can apply during an extended stay in a state institution, from the fourth month of admission.

What does your SASSA status mean?

Approved means SASSA accepted your application and will pay you. Paid means the money has been sent to your bank account. Declined means you were not approved for that month.

Pending means SASSA is still checking your details. Bank Details Pending means your bank information is not yet verified. Other messages you may see include Identity Verification Failed, Alternative Income Source Identified, UIF Registered, NSFAS Registered, Means Test Failed, Period Pending, Period Approved, Period Declined, No Records Found, Application Not Found, Under Review, Suspended, Cancelled, Referred, Reapplied, Source Limit Exceeded, Application Invalid, Check Failed, Application Complete and Approved but no payment.

Appeal decision times vary. Check your submitted month on the official portal; see our appeal timing guidance for the distinction between submission deadlines and processing targets.

A regular SASSA status check helps you catch a change early. If no payment date is showing while your status says Approved, wait for the monthly run before you worry.

Why is my verification link not working?

A verification link usually fails because it has expired, was already used, or went to a phone number that is no longer yours.

Common reasons a verification link fails

Most failures come from one of four things: the secure link timed out, the ID number or phone number did not match SASSA's records, the network dropped while the page loaded, or the browser on your phone blocked the page. Use one tab, a stable signal and the phone registered in your name.

Resend verification link

Tap Resend Verification Link once. If nothing arrives, choose Forgot Verification Link on the login screen. A new one-time password should come by SMS within a few minutes. Do not request ten links in a row, because the oldest ones stop working.

What if you have no smartphone or data for biometrics?

Use a family member's phone with guest Wi-Fi, or go to a SASSA office near you with your ID document. Some checks need biometric (facial/fingerprint) verification, and those are the options when you have no smartphone or data. Staff at regional offices can help you finish the check on an office computer.

How do you update or verify your bank account online?

Log in at srd.sassa.gov.za, open Change Banking Details or Update Banking Information, and type your account number, account type and branch code exactly as your bank prints them.

The account must be a personal bank account in your own name. Joint accounts, third-party accounts and an eWallet are not accepted. The SRD is paid into a bank account, not an eWallet.

SASSA checks the bank information before it pays. This usually takes 3 to 7 working days. If nothing changes after 5 to 10 business days, contact SASSA. Bank Details Pending means the check is still running. It does not mean the money is gone.

Under the 2026 banking rules you may use any registered bank in South Africa. Your SASSA banking details must match your ID. If you change your phone number, update your details before you verify your banking details again.

Most bank-to-bank transfers clear within three business days after SASSA releases the money.

How the alerts work

SASSA can send SMS alerts and WhatsApp alerts to your registered phone number when your status changes or a payment date is set.

The messages are free to receive. They help you plan: if your payment date is the 24th, you can budget for that week instead of guessing.

How to activate SMS alerts

Log in to the portal, open your profile and opt in for SMS notifications. Check that your registered phone number is correct, then save. You can also turn on WhatsApp alerts by following the prompts on the SASSA WhatsApp channel.

If something's not working

If no SMS arrives, check that your phone has signal and space for messages. If your number changed, use the option to change your SRD phone number on the portal. Keep your login details private.

How to fix it

If you are still stuck, send a message to the SASSA WhatsApp line on 082 046 8553, or call the toll-free helpline on 0800 60 10 11.

Does SASSA pay an R500 grant?

No. There is no separate R500 SASSA Grant, R500 grant or R500 payment. The SRD pays R370 and Grant-in-Aid pays R580.

People often confuse a R500 payment with the old R350 amount, a special bonus rumour or a private payment. If a message says you qualify for a R500 grant, check the official SASSA channels before you share your ID or bank details.

Why this misinformation keeps spreading

Rumours spread fast because a screenshot is easy to share and hard to check. The SRD amount is fixed at R370, and SASSA has not announced an R500 grant. Use the official SASSA website or the portal to confirm any amount before you believe it.

What should you do if your balance looks wrong?

If your balance shows zero, first check your payment status on the portal. The money may still be Pending, or it may have gone to an old bank account.

Steps to correct a wrong balance

  1. Open the portal and read your status and full payment history.
  2. Compare the transaction history in your bank app with the payment date.
  3. If an ATM says insufficient funds, try a second ATM or a shop till before you assume the worst.
  4. If the money went to a closed account, update your banking details on the portal.
  5. If you suspect fraud, contact your bank and report the incident the same day.

Your SASSA card may still work at a till even when an ATM refuses it. Ask the cashier to try a balance slip, or withdraw cash inside the store. Never give your PIN to anyone who offers to check the card for you.

Confirm whether your card is valid and where replacements are available directly with Postbank before travelling. We do not publish an unverified nationwide Gold Card deadline. A card-access problem alone does not establish that your SRD application has been cancelled.

How do you spot a SASSA scam?

A real SASSA message never asks for your PIN, password or one-time password, and no official channel asks you to pay to check your status.

Common scam tactics include a link that looks like the portal, a caller who says your grant is blocked, a request to send your ID by WhatsApp, and a helper who wants to use their own bank account. Protect your personal information and never share your OTP.

If you think you've been targeted, stop the conversation, take a screenshot and report it. Contact SASSA on the official numbers below, and tell your bank if you shared card details.
