SASSA Income Source Identified: What It Means and How to Appeal

Why SASSA says income source identified, how the R624 means test works, and how to appeal a declined SRD month with the right evidence.

If your SRD status shows Income Source Identified, SASSA's automated check found more than R624 in deposits during one month in the bank accounts linked to your ID. You can challenge that month for free at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal, and your 90 days count from the date SASSA declined that month.

The special COVID-19 SRD grant began in May 2020 at R350; the monthly amount later increased to R370 and is set to run until 31 March 2027. The October 2026 budget documents extend it for another year beyond March 2027, still at R370. SassaCheck is an independent guide, not SASSA.

What "SASSA income source identified" means

It is the SRD decline reason that appears when the automated monthly means test finds deposits above R624 for one assessed month. On the status page at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status the code is means_income_source_identified.

Older screens and the appeals portal may show Alternative Income Source Identified, Income Source Identified, Alternative Income Source, Means Test Failed or Means Test Failed: Income Detected. These are one decline under five names. The fix is the same: show what the money was.

The decline covers one month, not your whole life

Only the assessed calendar month is judged. Each new month gets a fresh check with new bank data, so a March decline does not block an April approval. Run an SRD status check every month at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status or through our status guide.

Why honest people get flagged

The system adds up total incoming deposits and does not read the purpose behind them. No human looks at your bank statement before the decline, so a loan, a gift or money you passed on can look like a salary. That is a false positive, and it is the most common reason for an Income Source Identified decline.

The published monthly SRD threshold is R624 per person, introduced in the August 2022 regulations and reiterated in SASSA’s review explanation. A deposit alone does not let this website determine eligibility; the official assessment and other conditions also matter.

How the R624 per month threshold works

R624 is the published monthly SRD means-test figure. It must not be described as the current national food poverty line without a dated source.

MeasureAmountWhat it means
Monthly hard limitR624More than this in a month can cause a decline
Weekly equivalentR143.07/weekThe same limit spread across a week
Daily equivalentR20.80 per day (R20.80/day)The same limit spread across a day
Grant valueR370The SRD R370 grant itself sits below the limit

R624 is a monthly SRD means-test threshold. Check the actual reason for the assessed month; if a deposit or record has been misunderstood, explain its source through the official appeal process. This website cannot decide that an appeal must succeed or fail.

Which of your bank accounts SASSA checks

SASSA checks every bank account linked to your 13-digit SA ID number, including accounts you did not register for payment. It does this through the National Payment System and the banking consortium, which covers Capitec, FNB, ABSA, Standard Bank, Nedbank and TymeBank.

A TymeBank wallet counts too. So do dormant accounts, cash deposits, transfers from other people, CashSend, Instant Money and e-wallet credits. A deposit into an account you had forgotten about can still cause a decline.

Nine situations behind the decline, and which you can appeal

Seven of the nine situations below can be appealed with evidence; real earnings and real business income usually cannot. Match your case to the row, then send the evidence listed.

SituationCan you appeal?Evidence to send
Family gift or transfer over R624YesBank statement with the deposit marked, plus a signed affidavit from the sender
Salary that has stoppedYesresignation letter or termination letter, final payslip, and a statement showing the salary ended
Money you only passed onYesstatement showing the incoming deposit and the matching outgoing transfer, plus an affidavit
Loan or mashonisa cashYes, because a loan is a debtloan agreement, acknowledgement of debt, repayment proof, or a SAPS affidavit for an informal loan
One casual or freelance paymentYes, if it was truly once-offbank statement plus a note or affidavit from the payer
Stokvel rotation payout, insurance claim or shop refundYesstokvel member agreement, insurance payout letter, or refund confirmation
Joint account with a co-account holderYes, if the money was theirsjoint account statement plus an affidavit explaining the other person's deposits
Real earnings above R624NoThe means test is working; wait for your income to change
Regular business incomeNo, unless the business is dormantbusiness statements showing R0 revenue, a CIPC dormant record and CIPC Director details

Family money is the usual false positive

The system reads a gift as income, so a parent or sibling who sends R700 for food can trigger the decline. Mark the deposit on the statement, attach a signed affidavit from the sender, and state clearly that it was a gift. Ask for the reference "Gift groceries" where the sender's bank allows it.

When a job has just ended: the 30 to 60 Day Lag

After you leave work, SARS's employment database can take 30 to 60 days to reflect the change. That 30 to 60 Day Lag means SARS employment data may still show a salary you no longer earn. Send the termination letter or resignation letter, your final payslip, and a statement proving no salary arrived afterwards.

Joint accounts and shared money

If you are only the co-account holder, the other person's income can still count against you. Explain it with an affidavit, then switch to a personal account for the grant and update your SASSA banking details through srd.sassa.gov.za. Our banking details guide explains the steps.

When not to appeal

R624 is a monthly SRD means-test threshold. Check the actual reason for the assessed month; if a deposit or record has been misunderstood, explain its source through the official appeal process. This website cannot decide that an appeal must succeed or fail.

Income disputes and appeal evidence

Explain the source of disputed deposits and provide accurate supporting evidence through the official appeal process. A court case or a once-off deposit does not by itself establish your eligibility or guarantee that an appeal will succeed.

National Treasury, SASSA and the Department of Social Development took the matter on appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal. That process runs through 2025 to 2026, and SASSA has not published a final rule on how it applies the judgment while the appeal is pending. A citation supports your argument, but your bank statement and affidavit are still the main evidence.

How to use the ruling in your statement

Reconsideration first, then a formal ITSAA appeal

Start with Reconsideration (Internal Review) when your case is clear, because it is an internal SASSA review that usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. Move to a Formal Appeal (ITSAA) if that fails or if your 90-day appeal window is closing.

Reconsideration (Internal Review)

This is a second look inside SASSA. It is free, you request it on srd.sassa.gov.za, and it suits obvious errors such as a once-off payment being read as a salary. It does not pause the 90-day appeal window, so note the decline date anyway.

Formal Appeal (ITSAA)

The Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) sits under the Department of Social Development and works outside SASSA. Submit at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal, choose "Means Test / Income" as the Appeal reason, and upload your evidence. A backdated payment can follow if the appeal succeeds.

The 90-day appeal window

The 90 days run from the decline date of that specific declined month, not from a refused reconsideration. You can run both processes at the same time if time is short. Submit one appeal per declined month through srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals.

How to submit an income source identified appeal

Confirm the exact declined month first, collect evidence for that month, then submit at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal before your 90 days run out.

  1. Check the status. Open srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status, note the specific declined month and the decline date, and screenshot the screen.
  2. Get every statement. Download PDF statements for that month from all your banks, including accounts you rarely use.
  3. Find the deposits. Look for the incoming money that pushed total incoming deposits over R624. Note the date, amount and sender.
  4. Match the evidence to the trigger. A SAPS affidavit is free at any police station and works for informal loans or cash gifts.
  5. Write a short statement. Keep it under 150 words. Name the date, the amount, who sent it and what it was for.
  6. Submit on the portal. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal, enter your ID, request the OTP, pick the month, set the Appeal reason to "Means Test / Income", paste your statement, upload the files and press Submit My Appeal.
  7. Track the submitted month on the official appeals portal. See our appeal timing guidance; no individual decision date is guaranteed.

Four short appeal statements you can adapt

Keep each one under 150 words, state the exact date and amount, and say plainly what the money was.

Groceries from a parent

"In March 2026 my mother sent R700 to buy food for the household. It was a gift, not payment for work, and the reference was 'Gift groceries'. I attach my March bank statement with the deposit marked, and a signed affidavit from my mother. I have no salary and no other income."

A job that has ended

"My last salary was paid on 25 January 2026. My job ended on 20 January 2026 and I have not been paid since. SARS's employment database may still show the old employer because of the 30 to 60 Day Lag. I attach my termination letter, my final payslip and a bank statement showing no salary after January."

Money passed on for someone else

"On 4 February 2026 R900 arrived in my account for my neighbour, who has no bank account. I transferred the full R900 to the shop on the same day. The attached statement shows both entries, and the money was never mine."

A loan I must repay

"On 10 February 2026 I received R500 from a mashonisa as a loan. I must repay it. It is a debt, not income. I attach the bank statement, the acknowledgement of debt and proof of my first repayment."

Bank statements ITSAA will accept

Send a PDF statement for the exact declined month from every bank account you hold, or a certified stamped statement from a branch.

Download from your banking app

Log into Capitec, FNB, ABSA, Standard Bank, TymeBank or Nedbank, choose the declined month and export a PDF. This takes about 10 minutes and needs no branch visit.

Get a certified stamped statement

Take your South African ID number to the branch and ask for a certified stamped statement. The fee is usually R5 to R20. This is the strongest version for ITSAA.

What the statement must show

It must show your full legal name as it appears on your ID, the account number, the dates of the declined month, and every deposit with its amount and date. Highlight the deposit you are explaining.

What gets rejected

Phone screenshots, a statement for the wrong month, a statement in someone else's name, a joint account statement with no explanation, and PDFs that are cut off or unreadable are all rejected.

Six habits that reduce repeat declines

Use a personal account, keep a record of gifts, and check your status by the 10th so the 90-day window never surprises you.

1. Keep the grant account personal

You can open your own personal account with Capitec or TymeBank in about 10 minutes with just your ID. Give SASSA that account in your SRD banking details, not a shared one.

2. Keep a gift log

Write down who sent money, the date, the amount and the reason. Keep the message or receipt. A later affidavit then takes minutes to write.

3. Know when income is real

A regular salary above R624 will cause a decline for those months. Your status is reassessed monthly, so you can qualify again once the income stops.

4. Ask for a clear payment reference

Ask senders to use a reference like "Gift groceries". The label will not stop the automated monthly means test, but it does make your file easier for a reviewer to follow.

5. Deal with dormant accounts

Close an unused account, or keep it at zero activity. A small deposit into a dormant account can still cause a decline.

6. Check early each month

New results usually start showing around the 10th. Do a SASSA SRD status check by the 10th, then again during the 10th to 20th window. A SASSA status check takes a minute and protects your full 90 days.

For payment timing, see our payment dates page and the appeal guide.

Contacts and where to check

For current helpline, email and other support options, see our SASSA contacts page. Check card or bank-account queries directly with your bank or Postbank.

Frequently asked questions

An income source identified decline is a monthly means test result, and each declined month can be appealed with evidence for that month.

What does the status "Income Source Identified" mean on my SRD check?

It means SASSA's automated check saw more than R624 in deposits during the assessed month in the bank accounts linked to your ID. It is a decline for that month only. A new SRD R370 application can still go ahead.

Are "income source identified" and "alternative income source identified" the same thing?

Yes. The current portal code is means_income_source_identified, and older screens show Alternative Income Source Identified, Income Source Identified, Alternative Income Source or Means Test Failed: Income Detected. Treat them as one SRD decline reason with one appeal process.

Can I appeal a SASSA income source identified decline?

Yes. You can appeal each declined month separately at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal within 90 days. The appeal is free, and you can also request Reconsideration (Internal Review) on the main portal.

How much can I receive in a month before SASSA says I have income?

R624 is a monthly SRD means-test threshold. Check the actual reason for the assessed month; if a deposit or record has been misunderstood, explain its source through the official appeal process. This website cannot decide that an appeal must succeed or fail.

My mother sent R700 for food. Can I appeal that month?

Yes. R700 for groceries is a gift, not a salary. Send the bank statement with the R700 marked, plus a signed affidavit from your mother saying it was a gift. Ask for the "Gift groceries" reference where possible.

Which bank accounts does SASSA look at?

SASSA checks all bank accounts linked to your ID through the banking consortium: Capitec, FNB, ABSA, Standard Bank, Nedbank and TymeBank. A dormant account, a TymeBank wallet, cash deposits, CashSend, Instant Money or e-wallet credits can all count.

How long does an income source identified appeal take?

Appeal decision times vary. Check your submitted month on the official portal; see our appeal timing guidance for the distinction between submission deadlines and processing targets.

What was the January 2025 High Court ruling, and what does it mean for my appeal?

Explain the source of disputed deposits and provide accurate supporting evidence through the official appeal process. A court case or a once-off deposit does not by itself establish your eligibility or guarantee that an appeal will succeed.

SASSA says I have an income, but I am unemployed. How can that happen?

The automated check counts total incoming deposits and cannot see what the money was for. A loan from a mashonisa, a stokvel rotation payout, a refund, a family gift or an old salary shown in SARS's employment database can all look like income. An appeal with an affidavit and a bank statement is how you correct it.

If my appeal succeeds, when do I get paid?

After Appeal Approved, payment usually follows within 1 to 3 payment cycles. It can be backdated to your original application date, so make sure your SASSA banking details are correct and the account is in your own name.

What does "Appeal Pending" mean, and what happens next?

Read the guidance above for this topic.

Can I appeal more than one month at the same time?

Yes, but each declined month needs its own appeal and its own evidence for that month. Do not reuse one bank statement across several months. One appeal per declined month keeps your file clear.

Grant history source

The grant began at R350 in May 2020; this is recorded in SASSA’s 14 May 2020 announcement. The 2022 regulations were a later phase of the scheme.
