SASSA Referred Status: R370/R350 Meaning and Fix

SASSA Referred status is a manual review, not a decline. See six causes, clear-up times, eKYC selfie steps, back pay and what to do next.

A Referred status on your SRD R370 grant means SASSA's automated processing could not finish one or more checks. Your file has moved to a manual review queue. This is not a decline or a rejection. Most files clear in 2 to 6 weeks, and in 2026 the most common fix is an eKYC biometric selfie.

What is the sassa status referred meaning?

The sassa status referred meaning is that one check on your SRD R370 application did not reach a clear pass or fail decision. SASSA's automated verification runs checks against six government databases, your banking details and fraud screening. When a result is missing or unclear, the system refers the file to a human reviewer instead of guessing.

A sassa referred status does not close your SRD application. The manual review can end in Approved, Pending or Declined. Because it is not a decline or rejection, do not open a second SRD application.

How does Referred compare with Pending, Approved and Declined?

Referred means a manual review, Pending means you wait, Approved means payment is due, and Declined means you can appeal.

StatusWhat it meansWhat you do
ApprovedAll checks passed and the grant is due for the month.Wait for a Pay date from the 24th in the monthly pay window.
PendingAutomated verification is still running.Wait 7 to 30 days and check weekly.
ReferredAutomated processing stopped and the file is in manual review.Check SMS and banking details; act if a step is named.
DeclinedA check failed and a decline reason is shown.Appeal within 90 days from the decline date on /appeals/appeal.

A SASSA status pending message means the system is still checking; it is not a referral. A SASSA status declined message is final for that month unless you appeal. Referred is the middle case: the system stopped, so the month is neither approved nor refused yet.

Why has my SASSA status changed to Referred? Six checks behind it

Six different causes can send a file to review: identity/eKYC, banking, SAFPS, duplicate application, data mismatch and compliance review. They are listed from most to least common, and each needs a different action.

1. Identity / eKYC Referral

Identity or eKYC referral is the most common cause. SASSA needs identity verification because facial recognition could not match you to the DHA photo. You may see Awaiting Identity Verification or Biometric Verification Required. An SMS from srd.sassa.gov.za should carry an eKYC link. Complete the eKYC biometric selfie with liveness detection and facial capture. Most identity referrals clear in 24 to 72 hours. If you cannot take a selfie, ask for in-person biometric verification at a SASSA office.

2. Banking Referral

SASSA needs banking confirmation from your commercial bank, and the reply was inconclusive. You may see Bank Details Pending, Under Review, Failed or Bank Details Failed. A new account, a FICA requirement or a banking verification issue with Capitec, TymeBank or Postbank can trigger it. Check your SASSA banking details status. Any status other than Verified points to a banking referral. Do not resubmit while the status is Bank Details Pending. The bank check often takes 3 to 7 working days. Allow 3 to 14 business days, then call after 14 business days.

3. SAFPS Fraud Flag

The SAFPS database has a flag linked to your ID. SAFPS is the South African Fraud Prevention Service. A flag can come from identity theft, impersonation, identity fraud or financial crime. It does not prove guilt, and a false positive is possible. Go to the nearest SASSA office with your original South African ID document. Bring the physical ID document, not a photocopy. If you are a victim, open a SAPS case, bring the police case number and keep it. Clearing takes 2 to 4 weeks, with a full range of 2 to 8 weeks.

4. Duplicate Application Referral

The system sees a duplicate application on your 13-digit South African ID number. A duplicate application flag can appear when an old SRD application was not closed, or when someone used your 13-digit ID number. Phone 0800 60 10 11 and ask for the duplicate to be removed. Report suspected fraud to the SASSA general helpline and SAPS. Do not submit another application. Cleanup usually takes 3 to 14 business days.

5. Data Mismatch Referral

The DHA identity check found a data conflict with the National Population Register or another record. A spelling error in a name, a different date of birth, an old maiden name or a new married name can create an identity mismatch. Compare your surname, name spelling, date of birth and ID number character by character. If you cannot fix it online, go to a SASSA office after 3 weeks. Data mismatch resolution usually takes 1 to 3 weeks once the correct details are captured.

6. Compliance Review Referral

A periodic eligibility audit picked your file because income data or another record changed. SASSA checks income against credit bureaus, SARS, NSFAS, a UIF record, correctional services and government payroll systems. Income above R624 per month can affect eligibility. Check your SMS for an eKYC link. Gather 3 months of bank statements; a statement should be less than 30 days old. Allow 2 to 6 weeks. A document check can take 5 to 10 business days after you submit everything. Escalate after 6 weeks.

How long does a referred status take to clear?

Most files clear in 2 to 6 weeks. Use the referral reason to decide what to check next; processing times are estimates.

ReferralUsual clearing timeEscalate when
Identity / eKYC Referral24 to 72 hoursAfter 3 to 14 business days
Banking Referral3 to 14 business daysAfter 14 business days
SAFPS Fraud Flag2 to 4 weeks; full range 2 to 8 weeksAfter 6 weeks
Duplicate Application Referral3 to 14 business daysAfter 14 business days
Data Mismatch Referral1 to 3 weeksAfter 3 weeks
Compliance Review Referral2 to 6 weeksAfter 6 weeks

Pending files usually clear in 7 to 30 days. Check your status weekly rather than daily. A new application while the old one is open can create a duplicate referral and extend the wait.

What happens after Referred? Three possible outcomes

The manual review ends in one of three results: Approved, Pending or Declined.

Approved

The manual check cleared and you qualify for the month. SASSA assigns a Pay date in the pay window, often from the 24th. Keep your banking details correct and the account active.

Pending

The referral block cleared, but the monthly verification system is still running. A move back to Pending is a positive sign. Wait 7 to 30 days.

Declined

Appeal decision times vary. Check your submitted month on the official portal; see our appeal timing guidance for the distinction between submission deadlines and processing targets.

Back pay for the referred period

If the file is later Approved, SASSA processes a backdated payment for the referred period in the next payment batch. Your banking details must be correct, and the account must be in your own name.

What should you do first when your status is Referred?

Start with your SMS inbox and then check your banking details. These two steps solve most cases before you queue.

  1. Search SMS and eKYC links. Scroll back 7 days for a message from srd.sassa.gov.za. If the link is time-limited, complete the selfie before the 24-hour limit ends. This resolves most identity referrals in 24 to 72 hours.
  2. Check SASSA banking details status. If it is not Verified, treat it as a banking verification issue. Do not resubmit while it shows Bank Details Pending or Under Review.
  3. Confirm your registered phone number. An eKYC link goes only to the registered phone number. If the SIM is inactive, a remote fix is impossible.
  4. Compare your details with your ID. Check your surname, name spelling, date of birth and ID number. A maiden name or married name change needs a visit to a SASSA office.
  5. Wait the right period and check your status weekly. Use the timeline table to judge the wait. Keep your phone and bank account active.
  6. Escalate with facts. Call 0800 60 10 11 with your 13-digit ID number and the date Referred appeared. Ask whether a compliance review is open, which papers are required, and for a reference number.

How do you complete the eKYC selfie step?

Open the eKYC link on the phone that holds your registered SIM, then finish the one-time PIN and facial capture in one sitting.

  1. Find the SMS from srd.sassa.gov.za. Check the address before you tap the link, to avoid phishing.
  2. Enter your ID number and tap Send PIN. The one-time PIN (OTP) arrives by SMS. OTPs expire after 5 minutes.
  3. Allow camera access. Use daylight, and remove any hat or dark glasses. Keep your face inside the frame.
  4. Follow the facial capture prompts. Liveness detection confirms you are present, and your selfie is compared with the DHA photo.
  5. Submit and wait 24 to 72 hours. Do not repeat the selfie unless the link fails.

If your eKYC selfie link has expired, or you do not have a smartphone, go to a SASSA office for in-person biometric verification. Bring your physical ID document. A link that is more than 24 hours old may need a new request.

Why are more people seeing Referred in 2026?

Automated verification and compliance checks have expanded, so more files are referred. This does not mean every applicant is ineligible.

If SASSA selects your grant for review, follow the instructions in your own notice and ask which evidence is required. A review does not by itself establish that you committed fraud.

Compliance has tightened since May 2025 through wider data-matching partnerships with credit bureaus, commercial banks, SARS, NSFAS, correctional services, a UIF record and government payroll systems. The anti-fraud system uses a fraud-prevention algorithm, and one fraud risk signal can create a false positive. A human reviewer in the manual review queue then applies judgment where automated verification cannot.

The grant was R350 until 31 March 2024 and is R370 per month now. It is extended to 31 March 2027. October 2026 budget documents extend it another year beyond that, with no increase. The audit covers 8.5 million SRD beneficiaries. National Treasury conditions and the monthly verification system mean checks will continue. A local government elections period can make offices busier, but it does not change why your file was referred.

An srd referred status means a check is under way. Pending and Referred are not final results, and you can appeal a Declined result within 90 days.

1. Call 0800 60 10 11

Call 0800 60 10 11. Lines are open Monday to Friday, during business hours (confirm availability before calling). Give your ID number, the date the status changed (for example, 4 November 2026) and your registered phone number. Ask the verification department whether a compliance review is open and which papers are required. Note the agent's name and reference number.

3. Go to the nearest SASSA office

Go to the nearest SASSA office with your original South African ID document, an active SIM and a bank statement or card. Ask for a manual referral investigation and a written reference number. Do not bring a photocopy as your only ID. The physical ID document is needed. If SAPS is involved, give the case number.

4. Ask Black Sash

Ask Black Sash for free paralegal help to prepare a formal complaint. Visit blacksash.org.za. They cannot approve a grant, but they can help you escalate with dates and a reference number.

What else do people ask about Referred status?

People also ask about meaning, timing, appeal, back pay and the eKYC selfie.

What does Referred mean in plain English?

It means one automated check needs a person to look at it. This is not a decline or a rejection, and your file stays open.

How long will my referral take?

Most referrals clear in 2 to 6 weeks. eKYC usually clears in 24 to 72 hours, banking in 3 to 14 business days, SAFPS in 2 to 4 weeks (full range 2 to 8 weeks), data mismatch in 1 to 3 weeks and compliance review in 2 to 6 weeks.

Why did my status change?

The six causes are identity/eKYC, banking, SAFPS, duplicate, data mismatch and compliance review. The status label does not name the check.

Does Referred equal Declined?

No. Declined means a check failed and a decline reason is shown. Referred means the check could not be completed automatically.

What is the first thing to do?

Check your SMS inbox for an eKYC link, then check SASSA banking details status. If it shows Bank Details Pending, do not resubmit.

Can I appeal a referral?

No. There is no decline yet. Appeal after Declined, within 90 days from the decline date, on /appeals/appeal. The ITSAA appeals portal handles the tribunal stage.

Will I be paid for the referred months later?

If the file is later Approved, a backdated payment for the referred period is processed in the next payment batch. Banking details must be correct.

My eKYC link no longer works. What now?

Request a new eKYC link through the portal or at a SASSA office. If your registered phone number and active SIM are working, the SMS can be resent. If not, go for in-person biometric verification with your physical ID document.

What is SAFPS and why does it cause Referred?

SAFPS is the South African Fraud Prevention Service. A SAFPS Fraud Flag can point to identity theft, impersonation, identity fraud or financial crime. A false positive is possible. Visit a SASSA office with your original ID; if you are a victim, bring the SAPS police case number.

Can I reapply while the status is Referred?

Do not reapply. A new SRD application creates a duplicate application flag and can extend the wait. Ask SASSA to clear the existing file first.

My status has shown Referred since 4 November. Which check is holding it?

The portal does not name it. Ask SASSA to read the file. Give your 13-digit ID number, the date it changed and your registered phone number. The agent can see whether eKYC, banking, SAFPS, duplicate, mismatch or compliance review is open.

My application has been Referred for several weeks. What should I do next?

Do not post the ID number. Call 0800 60 10 11 and give the date it changed and the number of weeks. Ask whether a compliance review is open, which papers are required, and for a reference number. If the wait is longer than the timeline allows, go to an office or contact Black Sash.

Should I ask if a compliance review is open and what papers are needed?

Yes. Ask the agent to confirm the review type and list the papers. Write down the reference number. A bank statement should be less than 30 days old, and 3 months of statements are often requested.
