How the SassaCheck status check works
SassaCheck retrieves your SRD status without saving raw lookup details in its application database. Separate security hashes and hosting logs are retained.
What this tool does
SassaCheck runs one kind of check: it asks SASSA's public SRD status service what your application status is, and shows you the answer.
You type your ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied. We pass both to SASSA's status service. SASSA's answer comes back to your screen. We then explain what that status means and what you can do next. For the meaning of a specific status, start with what your status means.
SassaCheck is an independent service. We are not SASSA and not a government website. We cannot approve, decline or change any grant, and we cannot change your banking details. If you would rather not use an independent site at all, use SASSA's own site instead: srd.sassa.gov.za ↗. It runs the same check and costs nothing.
The check is free. There is no account, no registration and no paid tier.
What happens when you press Check
Your ID number and cellphone number go over an encrypted connection to our server, on to SASSA's public status service, and the answer comes straight back to your screen.
The five steps, in order:
- Your browser sends your ID number and the cellphone number you typed over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our Johannesburg-hosted Google Cloud Run API.
- That service passes both numbers to SASSA's public SRD status service, the same service behind srd.sassa.gov.za.
- SASSA's answer comes back to the service, and straight to your screen.
- The form holds the result in the current page memory. It does not write the result to cookies, local storage or session storage. Reloading or closing the page clears that page state; browser history, autofill and device behaviour remain under your control.
- The home-page checker processes your ID number and cellphone number through our server to retrieve your result from SASSA. It does not save the raw ID, phone number or result in its application database. Separate security counters and hosting logs are retained as described in our privacy policy.
Read the consent notice before pressing Check my status. Submitting sends your ID number and phone number through our server for that lookup. There is no consent checkbox.
What we do keep
The home-page checker processes your ID number and cellphone number through our server to retrieve your result from SASSA. It does not save the raw ID, phone number or result in its application database. Separate security counters and hosting logs are retained as described in our privacy policy.
That is easy to say, so here is the full list of what we do keep, why we keep it, and how long it lasts.
| What we keep | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Keyed, one-way hashes of the IP address and applicant ID, with request counters | Rate limiting, so nobody can use this tool to guess other people's ID numbers | Counters expire after 10 minutes; Firestore TTL deletion happens asynchronously after expiry. |
| Operational hosting logs, including connection metadata and IP addresses | Security and uptime | 30 days for the default operational log bucket |
| Administrative audit logs (Google Cloud) | Records of administrative actions, separate from status-result storage | 400 days in the required audit-log bucket |
| Anything you email us | Replying to you | For handling the enquiry and any applicable recordkeeping obligations; contact us to request deletion. |
For status-check data, security-record retention and advertising cookies, read our privacy policy and cookie policy.
We limit requests using keyed hashes of both the IP address and applicant ID. Counters expire 10 minutes after the last allowed request; Firestore TTL deletion follows asynchronously, without a guaranteed deletion time. Operational and administrative logs are separate. Too many requests receive a rate-limit response.
The API returns Cache-Control: no-store. The application does not persist raw lookup details or results. The current page displays the response in memory; hosting metadata and rate-limit counters are separate.
Use the checker only for your own application or with the applicant’s permission. Knowing an ID number alone is not sufficient; the registered cellphone number is also required.
The plain-language version of all of this is in our privacy policy. The technical version, with the lawful basis for each item, is on our POPIA page.
What we cannot do
We cannot approve, decline, suspend, reinstate or speed up any grant, and we cannot change your banking details or your cellphone number.
- We cannot see SASSA's internal systems. We see the same status that SASSA shows on its own portal, and nothing more.
- We cannot tell you why your status is what it is when SASSA has not published a reason. If your status says Pending, we do not know why, and we will not guess.
- We cannot give you a date when SASSA will decide your application. SASSA does not publish one.
- We cannot lodge an appeal for you, and we cannot follow one up on your behalf.
- We cannot take a payment to release a grant, and nobody can. SASSA does not charge a fee to check a status or to pay out a grant. If someone asks you to pay, it is a scam.
- We never ask for your PIN, your password, your OTP or your card number. Nothing on this site asks for them. An OTP goes by SMS to the number you applied with, and nobody needs it except you. If anyone asks you to pass it on, they are stealing your grant.
How to verify this yourself
You can watch the request your browser makes, in under a minute, and see for yourself where your numbers go.
- Open sassacheck.org.za in a desktop browser.
- Open your browser's developer tools. In most browsers that is F12, or right-click on the page and choose Inspect.
- Open the Network tab.
- Read the consent notice, enter your ID number and cellphone number, and press Check my status.
- You will see one request to our Johannesburg-hosted Google Cloud Run API. The onward request to SASSA is made by our server and is not visible in your browser. AdSense also makes separate advertising requests; our code does not attach status-form values or results to them.
If you believe a request exposes status-form values or results, report it to hello@sassacheck.org.za without including those values.
Three other things are worth checking:
- The disclosure opened with the information button in the form card explains the same data flow and retention periods.
- Our disclaimer explains that SassaCheck is independent of SASSA and cannot change a grant.
- Our domain. Real SASSA websites end in sassa.gov.za. Ours does not. We are an independent checker, and we will keep saying so.
We do not have any social media profiles yet. If you see a SassaCheck account on Facebook, X or anywhere else, it is not us.
Operator, registration and Information Officer details are available on request. Contact us at hello@sassacheck.org.za.
For the longer version of who we are, and why our domain has "sassa" in it, read who runs this site.
How to check without us
You can run the same check on SASSA's own site, srd.sassa.gov.za, without using SassaCheck at all.
You will need your ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied. Nothing else.
| What you want to do | Where to do it |
|---|---|
| Check your SRD status | srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status ↗ |
| Lodge an appeal against a decline | srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal ↗ |
| Update your banking details | srd.sassa.gov.za ↗, banking section |
| Change your cellphone number | srd.sassa.gov.za ↗, the option to update your details |
| Apply for the SRD grant | srd.sassa.gov.za ↗ |
Appeal decision times vary. Check your submitted month on the official portal; see our appeal timing guidance for the distinction between submission deadlines and processing targets.
If you would rather speak to someone, these are SASSA's channels:
- Phone: 0800 60 10 11, toll free.
- WhatsApp: 082 046 8553. This is the only SRD WhatsApp number we publish.
- Email: srd@sassa.gov.za.
There is no SMS status line. SASSA sends SMS updates to applicants, but there is no number you can text for a status.
We keep a dated copy of these channels on SASSA's contact details, so you can check them against SASSA's own site.
Common questions
We do not save raw ID numbers, cellphone numbers or status results in our application database. Keyed security hashes, request counters and operational logs are retained separately; see our data-handling explanation. We cannot change a grant, and the check is free.
Does SassaCheck store my ID number?
No. Your ID number is passed to SASSA's status service and is not written down by us. The list of what we do keep is above, with the time each item lasts.
Can SassaCheck approve my grant or speed it up?
No. Nobody outside SASSA can approve, decline or speed up a grant. We cannot see SASSA's internal systems, and we cannot change anything on your record.
Is SassaCheck SASSA?
No. SassaCheck is an independent service. We are not a government website, and we have no connection to SASSA beyond the public status service that anyone can use.
What does the check cost?
Nothing. There is no account, no paid tier, and no way to pay us for a grant outcome.
Why do you need my cellphone number as well as my ID number?
Because SASSA's status service asks for both, and the number it asks for is the one you used when you applied.
What if I would rather not use an independent site?
Then do not use us. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status ↗, which runs the same check. How to check without us lists the rest of SASSA's channels.

Your ID number and cellphone number are sent over HTTPS through our server to SASSA to retrieve your status. Our checker does not save the raw ID number, cellphone number or result in its application database, and its application logging code does not record those values. The result is held in the current page memory, without saving it to cookies, localStorage or sessionStorage. For rate limiting, keyed hashes of your IP address and applicant ID are stored with request counters; their expiry is set to 10 minutes after an allowed request, and Firestore deletes expired records asynchronously. Google Cloud request logs can contain your IP address and connection metadata: the default operational log bucket retains records for 30 days, while the separate administrative audit log bucket retains records for 400 days. These audit logs are administrative records, not a 400-day database of status results. Google AdSense may use cookies and process IP, device and ad-interaction data; our code does not send status-form details or results to AdSense. We do not use a separate Google Analytics tag. See our Privacy Policy for details.
