SASSA Grant Cancelled: Reinstate Your SRD R370 Grant (2026 Guide)

If your SASSA SRD R370 grant was cancelled, you can often reinstate it at srd.sassa.gov.za. Steps, causes, backdating and timelines.

If your SASSA SRD R370 grant shows Cancelled, the application is switched off. It is not deleted, and the status is not a final refusal. You can normally switch it back on with a reinstatement request at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/ and SASSA decides most of those requests in 2 to 6 weeks.

What does SASSA grant cancelled mean?

Cancelled means your SRD R370 application is deactivated: the file still exists, but no new R370 payment will be created for you.

You can treat the status as a switch that SASSA can turn back on. Your record stays on SASSA's SOCPEN system and on the SASSA SRD portal, so the department can do that without you starting from zero. A cancelled SASSA grant is a status you can repair.

The grant was R350 until 31 March 2024 and has been R370 per month since 1 April 2024. The money is worth claiming, and the official reinstatement page is free and open 24 hours a day.

Four causes sit behind most cancelled SRD grants in 2026:

  • the automated monthly means test found income above R624;
  • a reconfirmation request went unanswered;
  • banking details failed and the payment bounce repeated;

Use the exact status and notice for your application. A declined month, a review, a cancelled application and a failed payment route require different actions; none can be diagnosed from a generic timeline.

Is cancelled the same as a declined status?

No. Cancelled shuts down the whole application, while a SASSA status declined message refuses one specific month. The two need opposite fixes.

Status wordingWhat it meansThe correct fix
Cancelled / Application Cancelled / SRD CancelledThe whole SRD application was deactivatedReinstate the application at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/
Declined (one month, often with a reason code)One month was refusedAppeal that month at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal
SuspendedA temporary hold while a check runsWait and recheck, do not reapply

Sending a cancellation to ITSAA wastes weeks. A formal appeal to ITSAA covers refusals only; it does not cover switched-off files. If you try to reinstate a month that carries a specific decline code, the portal cannot help either. That month belongs in an appeal, filed inside its own 90-day window.

Why was my grant cancelled? Seven causes

Use the exact status and notice for your application. A declined month, a review, a cancelled application and a failed payment route require different actions; none can be diagnosed from a generic timeline.

  1. Income above R624 picked up by the automated monthly means test.
  2. Failure to Complete Reconfirmation after a missed SMS.
  3. Banking details that failed, with a repeated payment bounce.
  4. A permanent grant detected on the same ID.
  5. Voluntary self-cancellation, or accidental cancellation.
  6. An eligibility review: follow the notice issued for your own grant.

1. Income detected above R624

R624 is a monthly SRD means-test threshold. Check the actual reason for the assessed month; if a deposit or record has been misunderstood, explain its source through the official appeal process. This website cannot decide that an appeal must succeed or fail.

The status may read Income Detected Above R624, Means Income Source Identified or Alternative Income Source Identified. SASSA reads tax and payment records, so a short job, a UIF payment or an NSFAS registered record can all count as an income source identified.

There is also a SARS lag period. Your tax record can still show old earnings long after the job ended, and the grant stays blocked until that record catches up.

About 8.5 million South African beneficiaries depend on this grant, so SASSA does not skip the income check at the centre of the means test.

  • If you still earn above the threshold, you are ineligible and the cancellation is correct.
  • If the work has ended, ask SARS to update your record, then wait for it to reflect.
  • Attach a bank statement covering the last 3 months showing no income.

2. Failure to complete reconfirmation

If the reconfirmation request goes unanswered, SASSA records Failure to Complete Reconfirmation and stops the grant without a second warning.

The reconfirmation step arrives as an SMS notification to your registered phone number. If your SIM was lost, swapped or the number changed, the message never lands and the deadline slips past.

To repair it, update the phone number at https://srd.sassa.gov.za, wait for the confirmation SMS, complete the reconfirmation declaration, then reinstate. You answer with a one-time PIN sent to the handset that holds the SIM.

3. Payment route broken or bank details could not be verified

When money bounces back month after month, SASSA treats the payment route as broken and cancels the grant instead of leaving it on a temporary hold.

Typical reasons include a dormant account, a closed account, an account number one digit off, an account that is not in your own name, or a duplicate account tied to a loan or a friend's phone. SASSA pays only into an account held in the applicant's own name.

Fix the bank account details first. Log in at https://srd.sassa.gov.za, open the banking section, correct the details and submit. Banking verification takes about 3 to 7 working days. Run a SASSA banking status check until the status reads Verified, then go back to https://srd.sassa.gov.za/

If you use a Postbank account, check the Postbank side too. A Postbank Black Card account with no activity can be flagged as dormant.

4. Check a card-access problem separately

Confirm whether your card is valid and where replacements are available directly with Postbank before travelling. We do not publish an unverified nationwide Gold Card deadline. A card-access problem alone does not establish that your SRD application has been cancelled.

5. New grant detected on your ID

An SRD grant cannot run next to a permanent SASSA grant, so when SOCPEN finds your ID on another grant, the SRD file is cancelled and reinstatement will not work.

The check picks up an Old Age Pension (R2,400/month), a Disability Grant (R2,400/month) or a Care Dependency Grant (R2,400/month). A Child Support Grant is money for the child in your care, not an adult grant, so it does not block an SRD application in the same way.

If the other grant is genuinely yours, accept the cancellation: a permanent SASSA grant pays far more than R370 per month. If the record is wrong (a duplicate ID, a grant that ended years ago, or someone else's file), call the toll-free helpline 0800 60 10 11 before you do anything else.

6. You cancelled it, or someone did it for you

Voluntary self-cancellation and accidental cancellation look identical in the system: the status reads Application Cancelled and payments stop at once.

Common accidents include a relative helping with your phone who taps Cancel My Application instead of Reinstate My Application, or you cancel on purpose to take a job and the job falls through.

Scams are another cause. Anyone holding your 13-digit ID number and your phone number can trigger a cancellation and then offer to "fix" it for a fee. SASSA never charges for reinstatement. Report a suspected fraud referral on 0800 60 10 11 and reinstate straight away.

Never share your OTP, and never let a stranger submit anything through a Moya App group or another third-party app on your behalf.

7. An eligibility review

SASSA conducts eligibility reviews and may ask an identified beneficiary for information. Follow the instructions in your own notice; a review does not itself prove fraud or establish that reinstatement is the right action.

For a review, follow your own SASSA notice and the published review guidance. No additional named programme is asserted here.

What should you do for each status, and how long does it take?

The fix depends on the exact words on your status page, so match those words to the first column, then follow the link in that row.

How to reinstate your cancelled SASSA SRD grant: 9 steps

Reinstatement is free, takes about 5 minutes online, and needs only your ID, your registered phone and the proof that fixes your cause.

Step 1: Repair the cause first

Repair the cause before you reinstate, because reinstating without fixing the root cause gets the grant cancelled again within 1 to 2 months. Correct the banking details, the phone number, the Gold Card or the income record before you open the reinstatement page.

Step 2: Type the address yourself

Enter https://srd.sassa.gov.za/ in your browser. Do not open a link from WhatsApp, an SMS or social media. Look for the padlock icon and read the address bar before you type anything.

Step 3: Enter your ID and phone number

Enter the full 13-digit South African ID number exactly as printed. Have the phone with your registered phone number and an active SIM in your hand.

Step 4: Request the OTP

Request the one-time PIN on the page; SASSA sends it by SMS. It expires in 5 minutes. If nothing arrives after about 3 minutes, tap resend; if it still fails, update the phone number at https://srd.sassa.gov.za first.

Step 5: Choose the right button

Choose Reinstate My Application on the screen that also offers Cancel My Application. Tap Reinstate My Cancelled Application. A wrong tap here is the classic accidental cancellation.

Step 6: Answer the declaration honestly

Answer the declaration honestly with your employment status, income level, grant receipt and residency. SASSA checks those answers against live government data, and a false declaration risks a fraud referral.

Step 7: Attach your proof

Upload a bank statement, a termination letter from your old job, or your ID document. Clear, legible PDF files from the most recent period work best.

Step 8: Submit and save the reference number

Submit the request and save the reference number the screen returns. A confirmation SMS follows, and the reinstatement process usually runs 2 to 6 weeks.

Step 9: Track the outcome

Check https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status every week and keep the phone active for the SMS notification. Do not send a duplicate request while the first one is Pending, because it slows the file down.

Will you get backdated payments after reinstatement?

Mostly no. A reinstatement restarts the grant from the month it is approved, so the cancelled months are usually lost.

That is partial backdating at best. Reinstatement pays forward from the approval month. A successful ITSAA appeal, by contrast, can pay from the original SRD R370 application date.

Appeal the declined months separately

Appeal each declined month separately, because some cancelled months also carry a specific decline code. You can appeal the declined months one at a time at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal, each inside its own 90-day appeal window. An appeal of that kind does produce backdated payments when it succeeds.

The practical approach is to do both: reinstate now for future months, and appeal the declined months in parallel for the past ones.

When no backdated payment is possible

A month cancelled without a decline code has no appeal pathway. Nothing brings it back, and at R370 per month the loss grows fast: three lost months is R1,110. Act in the same week you spot the cancellation.

What if your reinstatement request is rejected?

If SASSA refuses the request, you have three routes: a fresh application, an appeal of the reinstatement decision, or a manual reinstatement review at an office.

Lodge a fresh SRD application

Apply again at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/ if your circumstances changed or the reapply window has closed. There is no penalty for returning after a cancelled SASSA SRD grant.

Appeal the rejection

Appeal the reinstatement decision at the same address used for monthly decline appeals: https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal. This appeal is separate from a monthly decline appeal, although it uses that address. Answer the exact reason given and attach documents that settle that point. ITSAA decides the matter.

Ask for a manual reinstatement review

Ask for a manual reinstatement review at the nearest SASSA office, Monday to Friday during business hours (confirm current availability), and take your original ID document, your latest bank statement and a printed copy of the cancellation SMS. Write down the reference number you are given.

How to cancel your own grant if you need to

If you no longer qualify, cancel the grant yourself: online at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/ (up to 7 business days), by phone on 0800 60 10 11 during Monday to Friday during business hours (confirm current availability), or by email to srd@sassa.gov.za (7 to 14 business days).

Do it in the month your income rises above R624. Drawing R370 per month while you earn is fraud, and SASSA can recover the money through overpayment recovery, with a fraud referral to follow.

The portal shows Voluntary Self-Cancellation or Accidental Cancellation before the file closes, and a cancellation SMS confirms it.

Cancelling your SRD grant does not touch a Child Support Grant, a Disability Grant or any other SASSA payment. Those are separate files.

Six habits that prevent a grant cancellation

Six habits can prevent a grant cancellation: most cancellations come from four small slips, and these monthly habits keep the R370 coming.

  1. Keep your SIM active and your registered number current.
  2. Answer the reconfirmation request the day the SMS arrives.
  3. Keep your banking details correct and the account active.
  4. Run a SASSA status check once a month at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/
  5. Report an income change before SASSA finds it.

The grant in late 2026: extension and payment dates

The SRD grant is funded to 31 March 2027, and the October 2026 budget documents extend it for another year beyond March 2027 at the same R370 a month.

Permanent grant payments for November 2026: older persons on 30 October 2026, disability on 2 November 2026, children on 3 November 2026, and grants under review on 5 November 2026. The 4 November local government elections fall in that same week, so confirm your own date before you travel.

The SRD payment date for November 2026 has not been released yet. The October 2026 and September 2026 dates have passed, and a payment for a cancelled month will not appear at all.

Frequently asked questions

What does SASSA grant cancelled mean for my money?

It means the application is deactivated and no new R370 payment will be created until you reinstate. The file is not deleted and the cancellation is not permanent.

How do I reinstate a cancelled SASSA SRD grant?

Fix the cause first, then go to https://srd.sassa.gov.za/ enter your 13-digit ID number and registered phone number, request the OTP, choose Reinstate My Application, complete the declaration, attach your proof and submit. Save the reference number.

Is cancelled the same as a declined status?

No. A cancelled grant must be reinstated; a declined month must be appealed at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal within 90 days. Doing the wrong one wastes weeks.

Will SASSA pay me for the months the grant was cancelled?

Usually not. Reinstatement pays forward from the approval month, which is partial backdating at best. Only declined months with a specific decline code, taken to appeal in time, can pay backdated money.

How long does a SASSA reinstatement take?

Appeal decision times vary. Check your submitted month on the official portal; see our appeal timing guidance for the distinction between submission deadlines and processing targets.

I missed the reconfirmation SMS. Can I still reinstate?

Yes. Update your registered phone number at https://srd.sassa.gov.za, complete the reconfirmation declaration, then reinstate. Keep the SIM in the phone that receives SASSA messages.

Can I just reapply instead of reinstating?

You can, but reinstatement usually restores the file faster. A fresh application at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/ makes sense when your circumstances changed or the reinstatement was refused.

My grant was cancelled over the Gold Card. What now?

Check current card validity and replacement arrangements directly with Postbank or SASSA before travelling. This page does not assert a Gold Card cut-off date.

How do I check my status after reinstatement?

Use https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status with your ID number and registered phone. Expect Pending first, then Approved once the file is processed. Check weekly and keep the phone active.

What if my reinstatement request is rejected?

Lodge a fresh application, appeal the reinstatement decision at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal, or ask for a manual reinstatement review at your nearest SASSA office with your original ID document and bank statement.

What happens if my income is now above R624?

Then you are ineligible and the cancellation is correct. Cancel the grant yourself at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/ or on 0800 60 10 11 to avoid overpayment recovery and a fraud referral.

Does anyone need to be paid for a reinstatement?

No. Every step is free. Never send money, your OTP or your banking details to anyone offering to fix a cancelled SASSA grant on WhatsApp or through a third-party app.
