SASSA SRD Appeal: Check Status, Submit an Appeal and Read the Decision

How to appeal a declined SASSA SRD R370 month, check your appeal status, write a reason and understand Pending, Referred or Dismissed. Free steps.

Your SRD R370 month was declined: what now?

Appeal decision times vary. Check your submitted month on the official portal; see our appeal timing guidance for the distinction between submission deadlines and processing targets.

First, look at what your status says. Only a month marked Declined can be appealed. If the month is still Pending or Under Review, there is nothing to appeal yet.

What your current SASSA status means

What is an SRD appeal?

An SRD appeal is a free, formal request for a second look at one declined month of your Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. SASSA's system decides SRD months automatically; an appeal sends that decision to ITSAA, which tests it against the SRD grant's own eligibility rules.

An appeal is not a new application. It does not change your bank details, your phone number or your personal details. Those details have their own update steps (see phone number change guide and banking details update guide).

The tribunal works under the Department of Social Development (DSD), not SASSA. That is why a review can end differently from the first answer.

Appeal, re-apply, or wait?

Appeal when a specific month was declined and you believe the reason is wrong; re-apply when your life has changed since the last SRD R370 application.

An appeal challenges the no for one month. A new application starts from zero and is judged on today's facts, such as a new address, a new phone number, or a job you started and then lost.

Waiting is right when your status says Pending or Under Review. There is no decision to fight until a month is declined.

Who can appeal a declined month?

You can appeal if you met the SRD rules when the month was declined, and you are inside the 90-day window.

The SRD grant is for unemployed adults who pass the means test. To appeal, you need:

  • Age eligibility: you must be 18 or older and under 60. You may see it written as aged 18 up to 60, but the rule is that you must not have turned 60.
  • Status: you must be a South African citizen, a permanent resident, or a qualifying refugee/asylum holder with a passport/permit number.
  • ID: a 13-digit South African ID number. If Home Affairs has not confirmed it, sort out ID renewal or a name change first.
  • Income: your income must sit under the means-test threshold of R624 a month.
  • Submit each declined month promptly and follow the current portal deadline. If you have missed it, seek guidance from the tribunal or an adviser; this website does not promise that a late appeal will be accepted.

Pending, Under Review and Referred are not appealable yet. Identity Verification Failed is also a fix-first status: the tribunal cannot rule while your identity is unconfirmed.

Submit an appeal promptly

Appeal each declined SRD month separately and submit as soon as you receive the decision. SASSA’s briefing to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament records a 90-day appeal window. Follow the deadline in the current portal or your notice; do not wait until the final day.

Source: Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s record of SASSA’s May 2022 briefing. This does not establish that late appeals will be accepted.

What is the SASSA appeal form?

The SASSA appeal form is an online form on SASSA's own appeals site. There is no PDF to download, print or email.

The official SRD appeal portal sits at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal. That is the SASSA appeal form 2026, and using it costs nothing.

Have these ready before you open it

  • Your 13-digit South African ID number.
  • Registered phone number: the 10-digit phone number that gets SASSA SMS messages. This is the number that will receive the one-time PIN.
  • The declined month or months.
  • Your appeal reason, written out on paper first if that helps.
  • Photos or PDFs of your supporting documents.

One month per appeal

Pick the exact month that shows Declined. If two months were declined, send two appeals. The portal takes one month per submission.

How do you submit an SRD appeal, step by step?

Do it on the official SRD appeal portal, one month at a time, and save the confirmation reference number before you close the page.

  1. Open srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal in any browser on your phone.
  2. Use Choose Language if you want one. The menu lists English, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sepedi and Sesotho.
  3. Type your 13-digit ID number, then the cellphone number on your SRD profile.
  4. Ask for a one-time PIN (OTP) by SMS, then type the OTP into the box.
  5. Select the declined month. Later, repeat the whole process for every other declined month.
  6. Read the decline reason on screen and write your appeal reason in the space given.
  7. Upload your supporting documents.
  8. Check every field and submit. Appeals are free, so no payment screen should appear.
  9. Save the confirmation reference number. Screenshot it, and keep the SMS confirmation if one arrives.

What should your appeal reason say?

Your appeal reason should answer the exact decline reason in a few short, factual sentences, then point to the proof you attached.

How to write it

  • Name the reason and say why it is wrong for that month.
  • Give dates and amounts.
  • Keep it short. Three to six sentences is enough.
  • Be truthful. Do not paste someone else's story.
  • Match each claim to a document.

Examples by decline reason

Decline reasonWhat to explainDocuments to attach
Income identified / Alternative Income Source Identified / Means Test Failed / deposits above R370Explain each deposit. Say whether it was pay, a gift or a loan.3-month bank statement, written explanation of deposits, affidavit
UIF RegisteredSay when you stopped working and whether a UIF claim is still open.UIF status letter, letter of resignation / termination letter from the Department of Labour
NSFAS RegisteredExplain that NSFAS is a study bursary, not a salary.NSFAS proof, proof of registration
Government Employee / IPR5 / Government income / employer recordSay you are not a government employee, or that the record is old.Employer letter, payslip, affidavit
Existing Grant Detected / Other grant detectedName the grant and say whether it is still active.SASSA letter
Identity or bank-detail mismatch / Identity Verification FailedShow that your names, ID and bank account all match.ID copy, bank letter, proof of a name change
Duplicate / fraud flagSay you did not apply twice and ask for a manual check.ID copy, affidavit

A recent 3-month bank statement and a written explanation of deposits make almost every income appeal stronger. Name each deposit. For example: "The R1,200 deposit on 15 April 2026 was a loan from my brother Sipho, not pay. The R800 deposit was a once-off transfer from a friend." Add an affidavit if you can.

Our SASSA Decline Reasons Explained page covers more labels.

How do you check your SASSA appeal status?

Sign in on the appeals page with your ID and the cellphone number linked to your SRD profile, and the site shows an appeal status for each month.

  1. Open srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals on your phone.
  2. Type your ID number, then the cellphone number SASSA has on file for you.
  3. Enter the OTP you receive by SMS.
  4. Look at each month and read its status.
  5. Note the reference number and the date shown.

This SRD appeal status check is the one to use. It shows your case month by month, and it changes as ITSAA works. Check every 7 to 14 days rather than every hour.

The wider SASSA status check appeal view on the main SRD page shows the grant side. The appeals page shows the tribunal side.

What does each appeal status mean?

Each label tells you one of three things: wait, send something, or move on.

Status you seeWhat it meansWhat to do
Appeal Pending / PendingITSAA has the appeal and no reviewer has picked it up yet.Wait. Do not resubmit. Check again in 7 to 14 days.
Your Appeal Is Being Reviewed / Under Review / ITSAA Is Processing Your CaseA reviewer is working on the case right now.Wait. Answer fast if you are asked for documents.
ReferredMore information or another check is needed.Send what is asked and keep a copy.
Appeal Dismissed / Your Appeal Was Not SuccessfulThe tribunal kept SASSA's answer for that month.Fix the cause for later months and re-apply. A High Court review is a separate legal step.
ApprovedThe month is reinstated.Watch for payment on the SRD payment schedule.

If you are still asking "What does my appeal status mean?" after reading this table, call the helpline and quote your reference number.

How long does an appeal decision take?

The submission deadline and the processing time are different. DSD’s performance plan uses a 90-day adjudication target; a target does not guarantee an individual decision date. Keep your submission confirmation and track the appealed month.

Source: DSD’s published performance plan. Follow up through the official support channels if your case remains unresolved.

What happens after an appeal is approved?

An approval overturns the decline for that month, so the grant is back on and payment follows the SRD payment schedule.

SRD payments are usually paid in batches from the 21st to the 30th of the month. Dates can shift: a public holiday such as Heritage Day, or a busy week like the 4 November local government elections, can move the pay run.

If your status says Approved but you have no payment, check your bank details. Bank changes are verified in about 3 to 7 working days, and a wrong account number holds up the money. Use the banking details update guide.

For month-by-month dates, use the SASSA Payment Dates hub.

Can you appeal one month or several?

You can appeal several declined months, but each one needs its own appeal.

The tribunal looks at one month at a time. If March and April were both declined, you send a March appeal and an April appeal, each with its own reason and its own proof.

Submit each declined month promptly and follow the current portal deadline. If you have missed it, seek guidance from the tribunal or an adviser; this website does not promise that a late appeal will be accepted.

Website & portal problems

Most failures on the appeals page come from OTP, network or registration issues rather than the appeal itself.

No OTP arrives

Check that the SIM is in the phone and has signal. Wait two minutes. Do not tap send again and again. Repeated requests can lock you out. If the number is wrong, use the phone number change guide, and visit a SASSA office if you must update it in person.

SIM registration and RICA

A number that is not registered in your name, or one that was recycled, will fail identity checks. Ask your network provider about RICA and SIM registration.

eKYC and biometric checks

SASSA may ask for biometric/eKYC verification, sometimes through a live biometric facial verification link sent by SMS. That step is separate from the appeal. Do it when asked, and never pay anyone to do it for you.

Timeouts and missing statuses

If you see no status showing, or the page says your status wont be shown, your record may not have loaded. Try later, off-peak, on a different browser.

SASSA appeal scams & safety

Appeals are free, so any request for money, airtime or bank details is a scam.

  • Never share your OTP, PIN, banking password or card number.
  • Type srd.sassa.gov.za yourself. Do not open links from SMS or WhatsApp that you did not ask for.
  • No one can guarantee an approval.
  • Report a scam to 0800 60 10 11 or the police (SAPS).

R350, R370 and R624: what the numbers mean

R350 was the original SRD grant amount until 31 March 2024. The current SRD grant amount is R370 per month from 1 April 2024. R624 is the income/means-test threshold, not a payment.

People still search "SASSA R350 appeal" because the grant was R350 for years. The steps are the same, and the amount on record is now R370 a month.

The grant was extended to 31 March 2027, and October 2026 budget documents extend it by another year beyond March 2027, at the same amount.

Income and bank-account screening looks for regular money coming in. One deposit is not a salary, but the system may still flag it. If that flag leads to a decline, you can appeal it.

Frequently asked questions

My SRD R370 month was declined: what are my options?

You can appeal that month for free within 90 days on the official SRD appeal portal.

What is a SASSA SRD appeal?

It is a free request to ITSAA for a second look at one declined month. SASSA's automated answer is checked against the SRD rules.

Should I appeal, re-apply, or wait?

Appeal if the decline reason is wrong. Re-apply if your circumstances changed. Wait if the month still shows Pending or Under Review.

Why do some guides mention 30 days while the law allows 90?

Older SRD letters used a 30-day window. The amended Social Assistance Act and the portal now allow 90 days from the decline date.

Who is allowed to appeal?

You need to be an unemployed adult aged 18 up to 60 (under 60), have a 13-digit South African ID number and income under R624 a month, and send the appeal inside 90 days.

What is the SASSA appeal form?

An online form on the official SRD appeal portal. There is no PDF to download and no email address for appeals.

Do I need to see Declined before I appeal?

Yes. Only a month marked Declined can be appealed. If you see Pending, Under Review or Referred, wait or fix the detail first.

What happens after I type my ID number and phone number?

The portal sends a one-time PIN to that phone, then shows your months and the decline reason for each one.

What should my appeal reason say?

Answer the exact decline reason in a few factual sentences, give dates and amounts, and attach proof.

How long does a SASSA appeal take?

Read the guidance above for this topic.

What happens after an appeal is approved?

The declined month is reinstated, and payment follows the SRD payment schedule, usually between the 21st and the 30th.

Why do people still search for a SASSA R350 appeal?

R350 was the grant's name for years. The amount is now R370 a month, but the appeal steps have not changed.

How do I appeal a declined SRD application?

Open the appeals page, confirm with an OTP, pick the declined month, give your reason, upload documents and submit. Do it once per month.

Where can I find the SASSA appeal form?

Only at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal. Ignore links sent by SMS or WhatsApp that you did not ask for.

How do I check my SASSA appeal status?

Use the same appeals page. Type your ID number, then the cellphone number on your SRD record, and enter the OTP.

What does my appeal status mean?

Appeal Pending means wait. Referred means send information. Appeal Dismissed means the decline stood for that month. Approved means it is reinstated.

Can I appeal for a declined month only?

Yes. An appeal is about one specific month, not your whole application history.

Can I appeal more than one month at a time?

You can appeal several months, but each one needs its own separate appeal.

Why was my application declined?

Common reasons are income or UIF records, NSFAS registration, an identity mismatch, bank details that do not match, or another grant on your ID.

My appeal date changed: should I worry?

Read the guidance above for this topic.

Can I appeal an old R350 decline?

Submit each declined month promptly and follow the current portal deadline. If you have missed it, seek guidance from the tribunal or an adviser; this website does not promise that a late appeal will be accepted.

What is the difference between an appeal and reapplying?

An appeal asks ITSAA to review one declined month. Re-applying is a brand-new application, usually after your circumstances change.

Why is my SASSA appeal still pending?

Read the guidance above for this topic.
